Callerton Masterplan – Our Response

Our Response to the Draft Callerton Masterplan, sent 5th June 2016: – The draft Callerton Masterplan has us very worried about how cycling infrastructure will be designed and physically provided for in and around the new housing developments. In the masterplan the amount of appreciable consideration for cycling seems almost non-existent, particularly most of the mentions of cycling are specifically conflated with pedestrian routes. These two vital active-travel networks however have completely different design needs. Active Travel Priority Globally, there is no description in the document of how the area will be designed to prioritise active travel over private motor[…]

Our response to the Heaton Road Area TRO that we sent on the 10th June 2016: – Regarding GH/P44/1112 – Heaton Road For the specific details that are covered in the TRO (Legal order), we support the proposed changes as part of the measures being introduced on Heaton Road to make it safer for walking and cycling. Regarding the drawing that has been presented alongside the TRO, we do have some concerns, that we have previously raised during the development of this scheme. We urge the council to address these before the scheme is built. While the reduction in speed[…]

Ambition in the face of austerity?

Response to Newcastle budget 2016-17 consultation Ambition in the face of austerity? http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/your-council-and-democracy/budget-annual-report-and-spending/budget/budget-2016-17 (external link) To Newcastle City Council The title for the consultation is yours, but the question mark is ours. We at Newcycling would like to see real ambition for change, which we have outlined in our recent correspondence to Pat Ritchie (for example here). We also refer you to our budget response last year which described the necessary leadership and administrative changes required for mode-shifting transport transition (as your policies dictate) – to enable more people to have a true option to leave the car at home. It might be[…]

City Centre South East – Our Reply

Regarding Durant Road/Ellison Place and Market Street/Pilgrim Street Improvements The changes being proposed for both of these schemes offer improvement for cycling in the city centre. We congratulate the council on continuing to produce plans that could create a city centre that is much more accessible and hopefully also traversable by those using cycles. As the schemes are still in an engagement phase we nonetheless have some points that we would like to raise. We urge the council to act on these before any further phase. Width The drawings are not clear about the width planned for the two way[…]
