National consultation – road traffic law enforcement

We are replying as newcycling.org (Newcastle’s cycling campaign) to the Inquiry on traffic law enforcement by the Transport Select Committee. We have 1,600 local members; and we are an organisation entirely run by volunteers, a constituted community group, formed in 2010. We would like to take this opportunity to make a strong point about the ‘wider picture’ which appears to be missing from the inquiry: There are benefits of structuring the UK road safety system more effectively (to avoid death and damage to occur in the first instance and avoid state resources getting wasted). Government departments should start cooperating much[…]

Monument Area – Our Reply

Our reply to the recent TRO for the Monument Area of Newcastle City Centre Regarding GH/P44/1055 – Monument Area We are struggling to understand what problem(s) this TRO is attempting to resolve; the number of different parts that make up this TRO make it rather difficult to follow. There are sections of this TRO that will make cycling in the city centre more difficult than it already is, and in places also includes changes that could make movement through the area as a pedestrian more difficult. Some issues we were able to identify are: I 2c – Currently it is[…]

Our Reply – Elswick Road

Re: TS/ML/E91 – Elswick Road Strategic Cycle Route As a constituted community group with 1,600 local members we respond on their behalf to the plans for Elswick Road SCR. In general we support the plans presented for Elswick Road. Though we do have some points and questions on the design: There is one a bus stop on the plan (North side of the road, near Park Close) where the cycling bypass shown uses shared space (cyclists and pedestrians), rather than the more preferable cycle bypass with clearly separated space. The positioning of the bus stop also seems as though it[…]

Our Reply – Hyde Terrace TRO

Regarding: H&LS/TM/SG/H268 – Hyde Terrace TRO We do not feel that the planned changes for Hyde Terrace we achieve the intended result. There are no physical measure that will prevent drivers taking a right turn on Christon Road or that will stop drivers using Hyde Terrace as a rat run. Even with physical measures or permanent enforcement, drivers would just turn left before turning their vehicle around to achieve the same end result. We have been made aware of previous requests including a petition to close this junction to through motor traffic. We feel that closing this junction to motor[…]

Our Reply – Christon Road Area TRO

Regarding: H&LS/TM/SG/C378 – Christon Road Area We cautiously welcome the changes that will make it clearer that cycling between Christon Road and Alwinton Terrace is possible. However we do not want this local route to detract from the need to provide a continuous, safe and high quality cycle route along the Great North Road (including the Gosforth High Street). Also the distance between obstructions to allow for safe cycling for all types of cycles and trailers (not just bicycles) should be at least 1.5m, on the drawing the distance between the kerb and the bollard seems to be less than[…]

Our Reply – Jesmond Dene Road Plans

As a constituted community group with 1,600 local members we respond on their behalf to the plans for parts of Jesmond Dene Road. See bottom of page for the details of the council plans we are commenting on. We strongly object to this proposal, for the reasons listed below: Through discussions with newcycling.org members, council have previously attempted to provide explanations about this proposal. But we find a scheme that removes a cycle route to be completely flawed, from its outset. A proposal like this one should not exist in a city that claims it has ambitions to become a Cycle City.[…]

Our reply – Osborne Road plans

As a constituted community group with 1,600 local members we respond on their behalf to the plans for parts of Osborne Road. See bottom of page for the details of the council plans we are commenting on. Speed management We welcome the introduction of a 20mph limit for the full length of Osborne Road but would like to see a change in road layout so that this limit is self-enforcing. This would, most likely, require physical infrastructure and should include network planning measures too. In relation to this, we do question why it is necessary to use speed cushions, which[…]

John Dobson Street – formal order

We again congratulate the council planning to reallocate space to walking and cycling along the length of John Dobson Street. Reducing its strangling motorway appearance and improving its sense of place will be an asset to the public environment and to people using it. As a constituted community group with 1,600 local members we respond on their behalf to the newly reiterated plan for John Dobson Street. See bottom of page for the plan we are commenting on. Please note, that comments and questions have remained from the earlier plan. Creating and designing context For the city centre economy to[…]

Brandling Park plans including Village and school

The latest proposal is a relatively minor improvement on a currently entirely unacceptable situation for cycling, walking and a council that states it wants to design a city where people have clear alternatives to the car.  The proposal, in many ways, is a step backwards from the previous plans we have seen and commented on. Our earlier replies and communications concerning Brandling Park situated on the Gosforth SCR4 can be seen here. As a constituted community group with 1,600 local members we respond on their behalf to the newly reiterated Brandling Park plans, which have now been widened by the[…]
