Streets for People – response to draft plans for Jesmond

On 10th November we were asked to respond to more draft plans for Jesmond by the Council’s Community Engagement Officer for Streets for People. We responded on 25 November 2018: We are extremely pleased to see that the plans for Jesmond are of such high quality and, in fact, go above and beyond those drawn up by Phil Jones Associates. We have some very minor comments, which relate more to detail than to substance and hopefully these will be useful for the designers. Fury as £500k projects to make Jesmond roads safer for children and cyclists put on hold

Evening Chronicle – 31 January 2019 SPACE for Jesmond has hit out after two schemes disappeared from Newcastle City Council’s ‘Streets for People’ programme NewCycling Chair, Sally Watson, said: “One of these schemes was designed to make the street outside West Jesmond Primary School safer for children travelling to school following the removal of the two crossing patrols. “The other scheme saw improvements to Osborne Road between Haldane Bridge and Holly Avenue. Our Reply – Jesmond Dene Road Plans

As a constituted community group with 1,600 local members we respond on their behalf to the plans for parts of Jesmond Dene Road. See bottom of page for the details of the council plans we are commenting on. We strongly object to this proposal, for the reasons listed below: Through discussions with newcycling.org members, council have previously attempted to provide explanations about this proposal. But we find a scheme that removes a cycle route to be completely flawed, from its outset. A proposal like this one should not exist in a city that claims it has ambitions to become a Cycle City.[…]

Our reply – Osborne Road plans

See bottom of page for the details of the council plans we are commenting on. Speed management We welcome the introduction of a 20mph limit for the full length of Osborne Road but would like to see a change in road layout so that this limit is self-enforcing. Brandling Park plans including Village and school

The latest proposal is a relatively minor improvement on a currently entirely unacceptable situation for cycling, walking and a council that states it wants to design a city where people have clear alternatives to the car.  The proposal, in many ways, is a step backwards from the previous plans we have seen and commented on. Acorn Road – traffic order response

NewCycling (Newcastle Cycling Campaign) generally support the changes though we do have a few concerns that we would like to raise: We feel that the possibility of creating a vibrant street scape that increases walking and cycling in the area has been watered down significantly since the plans were first drawn up, and this has been done to provide a small number of extra car parking spaces. Thoughts about The Big Pedal

Sally, our Jesmond branch chair, writes about travelling to school by ‘alternative means’ and talks to a couple of other parents to find out what they think of the behaviour change initiative ‘The Big Pedal’. Every year since my son started school we have taken part in The Big Pedal. This competition, run in North East schools by the council’s partner Sustrans, challenges families to walk, scoot or cycle to school for three weeks during the spring. Jesmond update

Happy New Year! 2014 saw some interesting proposals for cycle infrastructure in Jesmond. It’s not always easy interpreting council plans and process, so below is written in good faith. Acorn Road Most controversial were the plans for Acorn Road which were put forward by the council in association with Sustrans. The aim is to make Acorn Road less congested and safer and more pleasant for pedestrians and cyclists as a destination.
