How to help

How you can help make Newcastle a city where people of all ages and abilities can walk, wheel, cycle and play.

Our efforts to make Newcastle a safer and more enjoyable place for cyclists depend on the work of our members. You helping out – even just a little bit – could make a significant difference in our mission.
We have broken the tasks up into small, bite-sized roles that mean there is something for everyone based on your skills, interests, and time you have available.

Boost Awareness

  • Create attractive promotional materials: Design posters, flyers, and digital content promoting the campaign, the benefits of cycling, our rides and other events
  • Coordinate social media: Schedule posts, share success stories, and answer questions on the campaign’s social media platforms
  • Distribute materials: Place flyers, posters etc in local cafes, libraries, bike shops, workplaces, schools, University etc

Build the Cycling Community

  • Cycling conversations: Talk to people you know about cycling, what would enable them to ride more, how could we help – and let the Committee know what you hear!
  • Share ride information: Research organised rides in the area and share information about them through our communication channels – or even organise your own rides
  • Lead Social Rides: we hold a Social Ride on the second Friday of each month, could you lead or co lead one of these?

Advocate for Cycling

  • Ward Champion: Be the ‘wheels on the ground’ for your local area and let people know what’s good and bad about cycling in your ward (especially your local Councillors)
  • Employer Champion: Promote cycling in your workplace, share our promotional materials with colleagues, let us know how your employer supports cycling (or could!)
  • Community Champion: Encourage and support cycling in your wider life – encourage your children’s schools, the gym, the pub, the community centre, library, doctor’s etc to make it easy for you and others to access by bike

Committee Roles

  • Chair: Lead our campaign efforts, coordinate meetings, and represent our interests in various forums
  • Treasurer: Manage our finances, ensure transparency, and help us allocate resources effectively
  • Secretary: arrange Committee meetings and the Annual General Meeting, keep notes of actions
  • Consultation Lead: monitoring and responding to planning applications and traffic orders and consultations for council schemes
  • Communication Lead: preparing our regular newsletter and co-ordinating other communications activity
  • Infrastructure Lead: keep an eye on the cycle-friendly and unfriendly routes and points in the city, help develop maps to understand this

If you are passionate about cycling and want to contribute to our cause, please consider volunteering and helping the campaign continue its work to create a safer cycling environment for everybody.
