Can you suggest any improvements that could be made to the infrastructure? I usually pick up a bike from gosforth high street to cycle into town when I'm at home. It's fine until I get to hay market, but then you can't cycle down Northumberland Street and the parallel roads are very busy and full of buses and don't have very consistent cycle lanes. Usually I would be trying to cycle to Central station or monument, but I always leave the bike at hay market and walk from there. It would be great to have a dedicated cycle route from hay market to Central station! The city centre is not cyclist friendly. Cycling is banned all day on Northumberland Street and there is no cycling facilities on John Dobson Street. Percy Street and Pilgrim Street are not good for cycling either. Cyclists should be allowed to contra-flow on one way streets, to avoid longer trips. Cycling should be made easier and safer Cycle lanes, whether shared with bus and taxis or separate would be good. Better cycle access into the countryside. There are not enough lanes or special roads for bikes, making it dangerous to cycle. More cycle paths if the city centre would be brilliant. More cycal only lanes The cycle lanes, where they exist, are not well policed e.g. cars always parked on the lane on Gosforth High Street. Provision is also patchy. The hill down to the Quayside. It would be good if the lifts in the Tyne Bridge were working again. It seems to be impossible to go direct through the city with one way streets etc. Quite safe but I know the area, may feel different as a visitor I hired during a Euro '12 England game so the streets were empty. As with everywhere - more cycle lanes needed. More bike lanes (like Holland!) More cycle paths. Traffic lights at Blue House round about. There aren't enough cycle paths. I'm used to holland which is so much more cycle friendly More cycle paths. More segregated cycle ways. Maybe safer bike lanes!! More cycle routes would be good. Cycle lanes through city centre. Biking in downtown/Percy Street can be stressful, and the Sustran Maps help a little but ultimately getting from Newcastle University campus to the quayside includes a difficult part no matter how you go down. Still areas like cycling into the city centre where no cycle paths. There aren't too many dedicated cycling lanes and cycling up busy streets is often dangerous, I normally stick to back lanes but most of them are cobbled and the bikes/baskets make an awful loud noise when riding there. Can be difficult to compete with cars when forced to cycle on road. Designated lanes would be perfect. There are not man cycle lanes on the main roads - something on Sandyford Road, for example, would make the prospect of cycling on these roads less daunting. I didn't notice specific cycle lanes right in the heart of town Dedicated cycle lanes in the city center. Its quite scary cycling with my girlfriend worrying about her getting knocked down, or me getting squished. Cycling in the centre Newcastle feels like a suicide attempt. There are no cycle lanes and the cars drive really fast. I suggest you convince the local government & politicians to check out the cycle infrastructure in the Netherlands. We are a real cycle nation and our foreign friends found the cyclists traffic jam a great sight. Very difficult to get to the other side e.g. From Jesmond to central station or the quayside it's not obvious where bikes should go just where they shouldn't! It is terrible to cycle in Newcastle. Nothing in the city lends itself to cyclists. The roads are horrific. Cycle lanes along main roads are desperately needed, along with light filters so cyclists can turn before cars. Roundabouts are especially bad. Yes - better routes into town, and past Haddricks Mill city centre cycling is poor (fragmented bike routes, etc) I think the City should become more bike friendly. The Dutch have the best attitude towards bikes. More dedicated cycle paths through the city centre would make it more enjoyable and safer to get about, and avoid cars and other traffic. Anywhere with traffic is awful, cycle lanes if in existence start and end without warning. Dedicated cycle lanes needed. More city centre bike lanes or zones would be a help. Lanes needed on main routes eg Great North Road north of Gosforth Too many cycle lanes shared with no-car lanes. I feel very unsafe with buses zooming past me. More dedicated cycle lanes separated form the roads are needed. More cycle lanes Can there be more dedicated space for cycling please! Its okay, although a few more cycle lanes would be good. Road markings could be better. I often end up in the wrong lane when I'm riding through an area I've never been to before. More and better cycle lanes More cycle lanes or paths Consistent bike lanes. The bike lanes that are available are generally good but they have a habit of just stopping halfway down a road. I realise it's difficult working around existing infrastructure so hopefully scratch bikes or its equivalent will get more people on side and make for more accommodations down the line. More bike lanes Bit intimidating when not ridden for a while and no separate lanes There need to be more segregated lanes, fewer shared paths (pedestrians do not adhere to cycle lanes) and more priorities in the city centre (through traffic lights, down one way streets the other way) etc. Bike tunnel under Swan House roundabout is needed. Going east to west to cross the central motorway is a nightmare! More cycle routes Allow cycling in Northumberland Street. Clearly marked cycle lanes Better bike lanes Travelling down to central station from Manors, there is no real route to follow. Can't cycle on Northumberland Street. More cycle routes and off road routes. More bicycle lanes would make cycling safer. Fine, as long as doing a journey that someone has already scouted out the best route for. Difficult to go new routes as it is stressful to 'pathfind'. More maps, signage and DEDICATED CYCLE ROUTES AND SEGREGATED CYCLE LANES would make it so much easier. There are not enough linked cycle routes across the city. A few more cycle Can be difficult, especially city centre where on main roads. More cycle lanes/designated cycle routes through the city. Really frightening as there arent enough cycle lanes, I only took the bikes a couple of times on my own and was so nervous I only take them in the evenings when there's less traffic or if I'm with a group of friends There could be more special pathways for bikes in the city centre. Make more way bikes I tend to travel from Gosforth into Newcastle. Travelling to Haymarket is great and mainly off-road however when you hit Haymarket it's really problematic to get through town without getting in the way of a bus. Lack of dedicated cycle lanes, cycle lanes that abruptly stop. More cycle paths Better/longer/wider/more! road cycle lanes/paths More bike lane More dedicated cyclepaths away from busy traffic into the city centre I find it very difficult to cycle in Newcastle as there is a lack of cycle lanes on my route to work and I don't feel confident to ride on the roads. The cycle lanes just end in the middle of roads and the rules aren't enforced.
