Wheels in Motion – Seven Strategic Cycle Routes proposed for Newcastle
Earlier this week, Newcastle Cycling Campaign launched a bold plan to create seven major cycle routes in Newcastle.
The cycling community is helping their council to put together an exciting package of transport measures as part of a £16 million bid from Tyne & Wear to the Local Sustainable Transport Fund (set up by the Department of Transport).
The seven cycle routes would go from Walker, Heaton, Longbenton, Gosforth, Kingston Park, West Denton and Newburn straight into the heart of Newcastle. Along the way to the city centre, the routes link up major employers, universities, schools and local shops. The routes go where they are most needed.
Bill Dodds of the Newcastle Cycling Campaign who has been instrumental to the creation of the cycle route proposal said “This is a fantastic opportunity to make Newcastle a better place for cyclists. Many people say they would love to start cycling but are afraid of the busy roads – the seven strategic routes will make cycling quicker, easier and safer.
We believe that cycling is good for the environment, good for the economy and good for people’s health. Our ‘Wheels in Motion’ proposal would definitely help cyclists get to where they want to be and encourage more people to get on their bikes.”
