Thinking cycling – Cycling & Society Symposium to be held in Newcastle

Joint organisers Northumbria University, Newcastle City Council and Newcycling are welcoming leading cycling researchers from around the globe to Newcastle for the Cycling & Society Symposium, 14-16 September.

The event starts with a cycling infrastructure safari hosted by Newcycling on Sunday to demonstrate Newcastle’s ‘starter city’ status, a day of talks presented by world-class researchers in the field of cycling on Monday – welcomed to Newcastle by Cllr Marion Talbot – and wraps up on Tuesday with organisational proceedings of the C&S group. Monday attendance is open to the public for a £5 fee, including lunch.

Cllr Marion Talbot, Chair of Newcastle’s Cycling Forum, says: “Newcastle has a growing reputation for being a city that is committed to promoting cycling in a safe and welcoming environment, so we are delighted to host this prestigious international event attended by researchers and academics. It will give us the chance to showcase some of the great things we are doing, and learn about the latest developments in European cities which we aim to emulate in the future.”

Dr Seraphim Alvanides, C&S 2014 organiser, says: “Now in its 11th year, we welcome this unique event in Newcastle and looking forward to debating the cutting-edge views from around the world, offering critical perspectives on cycling and its place in society. This is the first time the C&S Symposium is bringing together academics, practitioners and campaigners, promising to generate controversial discussions amongst the various communities interested in cycling policy, practice and research.”

Prof Mima Cattan, C&S 2014 organising committee member, says “Cycling is good for society. This conference is a fantastic opportunity for us to learn from some of the most prominent international researchers in the field about the best ways to enable safe cycling here.”
