Space for Cycling ride 2015

After the very successful Big Toon Ride last May and the Civic Cycle Ride in September, we are calling on all bike users, young and old, to show support for Space for Cycling by riding with us, once again on Saturday 25 April 2015. The aim of the ride is to show solidarity and unity for a smarter healthier city, and strength of voice for change and action to create high quality cycling infrastructure, and win the continued support of local politicians. We will be cycling across our iconic bridges, from Newcastle to Gateshead and back. Our route can be found at: http://www.plotaroute.com/route/14876 Facebook event[…]

Jeannie’s question

Jeannie: I have got a question. So I want to ride my bike but it’s kind of difficult. There is a lot of roundabouts. I cannot really go on to the pavement as I get shouted at. So I can’t really do anything; and I am kind of stuck. Where can I ride my bike to school? Cllr Nick Forbes, leader of Newcastle City Council replies: Good morning everybody. First of all, can I say a huge thank you for coming along today. I think it’s been absolutely magnificent to have such a brilliant turnout of people showing that cycling[…]

Chair’s half-year marker

Here we are – half way through our campaign year, which prompted me to have a look at our Campaign Plan agreed at AGM. I got to say: I am impressed with the focus we have managed to keep so far. Membership engagement We’ve been doing what we said we would do. Delivering the Space for Cycling campaign to your (and the Councillors’) doorstep, making a bell-ringing noise at our rides attended by hundreds, organising cycle infra safaris (four out of seven this year), directing members towards CycleScape to engage online, and record comments for future reference. And much, much[…]

But the biggest thank-you today actually goes to our Councillors. And I cannot stress enough that Newcastle with a sign up rate of two out of three Councillors to support Space for Cycling is absolutely magical. Newcastle[…]

Civic Cycle Ride reflections

And with your help, we did it again! Events like our Civic Cycle Ride are a massive undertaking to put on the road. A huge thank you to Peter and Claire and the sea of volunteers, Northumbria Police and Newcastle City Council staff to make it happen again – following the Big Toon Ride in May – so expertly and safely. Every one of us, who joined in – young, new, old, big and small – made it a reality and made it into the pedal-positive event we were so lucky to experience yesterday. Thank you! The sun was smiling[…]

News clipping – BBC Look North: Civic Cycle Ride

BBC Look North (27 September 2014) Cllr Nick Forbes remarks “Well, Newcastle is the kind of place that people haven’t really associated with cycling in the past. It’s not really got the history or heritage of it. But we are determined to put in place Strategic Cycle Routes which will be a really strong legacy of the future. And the more people we can encourage to switch to cycling as much as for health reasons as economic reasons that reduces air pollution, that increases road safety and it’s good for everybody.” Katja Leyendecker, Newcycling chair, says “It’s about Space for[…]
