Requesting party statements 2016

Received highlighting the problems of perpetual growth in a finite world making us aware of the progress that’s been made and assuring us of continued commitment outlining a largely supportive position, as well as explaining some limitations and reservations Awaiting   Like previous years, we have again written to political parties to inquire about their commitment and plans for sustainable transport, active travel and cycling infrastructure. Ahead of the local election and seamlessly building on Newcastle’s Cycle Manifesto and the highly supported Space for Cycling initiative, we specifically asked the political parties for their feedback on these points 1.Mode share[…]

Northumbria and Durham Police fine just one cyclist in the past year

Evening Chronicle (4/2/2016) – http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/northumbria-durham-police-fine-just-10839647 Here’s the full comment that Katja emailed to the journalist Tom Ough Hi Tom, ta for getting in touch. Here is our campaign position on pavement cycling https://newcycling.org/position-statement-pavement-cycling/ It’s complicated. Involved players in this maddening debate are police and council. In the absence of clear sensible cycle infrastrcuture even the national gov departments are confused, see link above (position statement). And maybe the message has got through locally that the council cannot just say “we want more people to cycle”, and then when people do they find no-where safe to cycle comfortably and use the[…]

Newcastle Cllr survey – Space 4 Cycling

Following our Councillors’ surveys in 2010, 2011  and 2012, we contacted all Newcastle Councillors on 30 December 2015 and asked them for their Space for Cycling thoughts and priorities. At the end of 2014, Newcastle celebrated being the top English Core City for Space for Cycling political support: 67% of local councillors supported space for cycling (we are now at 65% since the local elections in 2015). This is great and we said a big thank you at the Space for Cycling ride in September 2014. What does this mean and what’s next? We asked Councillors to select the top[…]

We’ll ride again!

Newcycling is planning its third Civic Cycle Ride for Space for Cycling, a national campaign for cycleways and improved cycling conditions. On Saturday 25 April, with just a few days to go until the national and local elections, we’ll do it all again. Quick recap, what is Space for Cycling? Starting one year ago, the national Space for Cycling campaign asks councils for better traffic engineering: protected space on main roads. It also wants to see improved town and traffic planning: lower speed limits • removing through motor traffic • cycle routes through green spaces • safe routes to schools • cycle[…]

Space for Cycling rides 2014… and the next one!

Catch the bug like Peter, join us on 25 April 2015 for the next one. Pedal power at its best.  “Fantastic!” One word that only just about describes our two Space for Cycling campaign rides in 2014. Our first ride To be honest, the first ride in May came at us a little bit at the last minute – well, two weeks to be exact. After a few late nights organising the ride we arrived[…]
