Civic Cycle Ride

Last updated 27 September 2014 PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF ROUTE DUE TO PERCY STREET CLOSED FOR EMERGENCY GAS WORKS After the very successful Big Toon Ride last May, we are calling on all cyclists, young and old, to show support for Space for Cycling by riding with us, once more on Saturday 27 September. We will be cycling across our iconic bridges, from Newcastle to Gateshead Old Town Hall and back. The[…]

Campaigners workshop in Leeds – a member reflects

Patrick, Sally and Katja attended the Space for Cycling Campaigners workshop in Leeds. Patrick sums it up here. In May, a healthy North East contingent made the train bound for Leeds and the recent Space for Cycling campaigners conference. Space for Cycling is a campaign theme which started in London, by the London Cycling Campaign, but has resonated nationally and was launched by CTC and local campaign groups at the conference. It’s a great way of communicating the sometimes fuzzy and disparate needs of people on bikes into themes that decision-makers can recognise, and act upon. The six themes of[…]

Historical cycling in Newcastle – a member’s observation

You may remember George reporting back from Dublin in last year’s yourReport series. George contacted us again, as he’s now stumbled across some great historical clips and photos showing Newcastle’s cycling past. Some people say “There is no history of cycling in Newcastle”. Newcastle has never been in York’s league, but I remember loads of bike shops on and around Shields Road in the 1960’s, so there must[…]

Pedalling on Parliament – a member’s story

The Pedal on Parliament movement is now in its third year. Last year 4,000 people pedalled on the Scottish Parliament to tell the politicians that they want a cycle-friendly Scotland. Since then, apart from little changes, Scotland is a long way away from achieving that – so they are doing it again. One of our members pedalled with them last year. Here’s the story. On 19 May last year we pedalled over to Central Station to catch the 9.15 train to Edinburgh and show our support for Scotland’s Pedal on Parliament. Riding through Edinburgh to get to the start of[…]
