Open Letter from our patron Christian Wolmar to Cllr Nick Forbes

Dear Nick (cc Chi Onwurah MP and Catherine McKinnell MP) I am writing to you as patron of Newcycling, Newcastle’s cycling campaign, with the hope to give support and confidence, and to inspire positive action. I have been carefully briefed by the Newcycling Committee of recent road building plans for Newcastle. There are opportunities. If there were any remaining doubts that good facilities attract people to cycle, what has happened in London over the past few weeks will allay them. The opening of several major sections of the Cycling Superhighways has transformed parts of central London into safe places to cycle[…]

Newcastle hosts first national debate of cycling academia and advocacy

As part of the ESRC Festival, Northumbria University and newcycling.org organise a day of researchers and campaigners to collaborate for the common good on national and local transport cycling agendas. But the biggest thank-you today actually goes to our Councillors. And I cannot stress enough that Newcastle with a sign up rate of two out of three Councillors to support Space for Cycling is absolutely magical. Newcastle[…]

Christian Wolmar is one of Britain’s leading Transport commentators. His interests spread from railway, public transport, cycling to inter-modal transport. He uses his bicycle as his main mean of transport around London. He is one of the mayoral candidates for the 2016 elections and his vision for the capital as a more affordable, liveable and sustainable city certainly echoes our vision for Newcastle. And we couldn’t agree more that sustainable transport and cycling play an important role[…]

Christian Wolmar – patron statement

I am delighted to become the patron to the Newcastle Cycling Campaign. As I have long been active in the London Cycling Campaign, and was for a time a board member, I can see how this kind of campaigning is vitally important in improving cycle facilities. There is much to be done and without a strong voice for cyclists, either nothing happens or, which is sometimes worse, the wrong sort of facilities are created which not only is a waste of money, but does nothing to help local people who want to use on their bikes. I have been up[…]
