Civic Cycle Ride – on the day

The event, held on 27 September 2014, kicked off with a speech from Katja Today is about, you might have guessed it, Space for Cycling. But overall it is about saying a big thank you. A big thank-you to you for actually being here today – thanks for joining us – and a big thank-you to everyone who has written to their Councillor. But the biggest thank-you today actually goes to our Councillors. And I cannot stress enough that Newcastle with a sign up rate of two out of three Councillors to support Space for Cycling is absolutely magical. Newcastle[…]

We say So Long to the Newcastle Cycling Forum

As a matter of routine, we regularly assess our communication channels with the decision-makers at Newcastle council. We want to use and direct our volunteer time and resources where we can make a difference and where it has the best effect. As a consequence we have pulled out of the Newcastle Cycling Forum. In a recent Campaign Management Committee we focussed on discussing the achievements of the council’s Cycling Forum and the unshifting relationship between the forum and the campaign. As a community group with a good track record of reliability, transparency, consistency in our message, high degree of professionalism and[…]

Position statement – Newcastle Cycling Forum

Since Newcycling’s inception in 2010* we have been involved with Newcastle’s Cycling Forum. We have sought to contribute to it meaningfully and methodically, staying true to our organisational aims, policies and membership view: always with the focus to improve cycling conditions in and around Newcastle. Over the years we also commented on the forum’s effectiveness (governance, decision-making process, information flow, community engagement tool, wider role and general administration). It is our disappointment with that aspect that led us to the decision to cancel our regular forum attendance. In the meantime we will use other – more successful and less frustrated[…]

We have crunched the numbers for you and here’s a quick visualisation too. At the time of writing (last updated 8 August 2014), we have 40 Councillors in support for Space for Cycling. This is 51% of[…]

Management Committee Meeting

Following the excellent, energetic and energising AGM, we will discuss opening up the Committee meetings to members – the frequency, locations and format of the previously held Quarterly Members Meetings may change. Check the events section for public members meetings. This time we are joined by Cllr Ged Bell (cabinet) and Cllr Marion Talbot (cycle champion) to discuss the outlook for cycling improvements in Newcastle, and what can be expected to happen in 2014/15. There is a bit of ground to break and gaps to bridge. We are welcoming Ged’s and Marion’s offer to meet the Committee as there is[…]

Interview with Newcastle Cycle Champion

We talk to Cllr Marion Talbot, Newcastle Cycle Champion and chair of Newcastle City Council’s Cycle Forum, about her plans, achievements and outlook for cycling in our city.
