Newcycling, the Newcastle Cycling Campaign, is seeking corporate sponsors to support a pedal-positive initiative and say a clear Thanks! to cyclists.
Cyclists are often left out. Sidelined in the highway authority’s process, they face a daily struggle for road space, safety and comfort. Even creating safe routes for our children to walk or cycle to school is a proven battle. Yet despite the woeful provision by the authorities, many, thankfully, continue cycling. Newcycling thinks that these people pedalling-on regardless should be congratulated.
Katja Leyendecker says “We have a project and would like to work together with businesses, companies and organisations. Our plan is to thank cyclists, something that does not happen often enough, if at all. Many of us struggle on despite the bad conditions out there. To these people we want to say “Thanks for cycling!” by handing out a goody bag.
“With so much anger, frustration, discrimination and danger on our roads to contend with day-in day-out, it would be wonderful to feel valued and welcomed just once in a while. In fact cycling is an activity that the authorities much ‘promote and encourage’ – to use their jargon – but then they routinely fail to physically back their positive words by real action on the ground like constructing cycle infrastructure making it safe and pleasant.
“The support we are seeking could be given in many different ways. We certainly require some monetary means to acquire and print the “Thanks for cycling!” bag itself [see mock up below]. Graphic design expertise would be helpful too. As for the contents, for example food stuffs like chocolate bars or maybe biscuits would be a lovely gift to cyclists, to replenish the pedal power expended.
“We will then coordinate volunteers to hand out the thanking bag on sponsors’ behalf. Of course we are happy to include leaflets of local transport charities and community groups with related interests for free.
“Interested? Intrigued? Just get in touch to discuss. Drop us a line.”
