Claire and Katja attended the annual CycleNation/CTC conference which was held in Edinburgh this year. We met lots of great campaigners with fantastic ideas and inspirational input for our own local campaign. Many thanks to Spokes, one of the longest-standing cycle campaigns in the UK, for organising this year’s successful conference. How about for Newcastle to stage this event in the near future!

01.10.2010 PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CYCLING CAMPAIGN ROLLS INTO NEWCASTLE Friday 1 October 2010 sees the launch of a city-wide campaign for a cycle-friendly Newcastle. The Newcastle Cycling Campaign aims to improve conditions for Newcastle cyclists. In June a ‘safe cycling’ petition supported by a staggering 800 local residents was presented to a Newcastle City Council meeting and won support from Cllr Wendy Taylor (Environment Portfolio). Supporters of the petition also included Newcastle MPs Chi Onwurah and Catherine McKinnell, as well as Newcastle Councillors Stephen Psallidas and Gareth Kane. Katja presented the safe cycling in Newcastle petition (report below) to the City Council. The petition rallied over 800 supporters and will make a real contribution to improving the experience of cycling in Newcastle’s city centre. The delivery agent is the council and we will keep a keen eye on progress of the petition’s recommendations.
