TS‐109 Durham Road QTC Phase 4 – Consultation – Not In Favour Of Proposals
Dear Nick,
I have reviewed the proposed Durham Road highway scheme issued for consultation by Gateshead Council. I ask the council to undertake a redesign of the scheme and address serious issues with the design as issued for consultation.
Local representatives of charities and user groups concerned with walking and cycling take a keen interest in this scheme given the routes importance as a walking, cycling and public transport corridor.
Although shared pedestrian ‐ cycle paths can be appropriate for greenway routes or edge of town locations, their use in a dense urban environment should only ever be seen as a last resort for short sections. To design in conflict between pedestrians and cyclists on a significant section of this major corridor is unacceptable.
Designing for separate bicycle and pedestrian provision will entail significant cost, both financial and in the allocation of road space. I ask the council to seek the additional funding to take forward a better quality design and create a scheme which matches the quality of public realm being created in other cities.
Yours Sincerely
Scott Dawson
