City transport bosses have confirmed that ‘low traffic neighbourhood’ plans to stop drivers cutting through a series of residential streets will come into force next month

Multiple road junctions in Heaton will be shut off to cars in latest efforts to crack down on rat running.

City transport bosses have confirmed that ‘low traffic neighbourhood’ plans to stop drivers cutting through a series of residential streets will come into force next month, almost a year after they were first set out. The changes, due to be made on October 24, will mean that vehicles will be banned from accessing the following streets:

  • Cardigan Terrace at its junction with Heaton Hall Road;
  • Falmouth Road at its junction with Heaton Road;
  • Bolingbroke Street at its junction with Heaton Park Road;
  • Heaton Park View at its junction with Heaton Park Road/Warwick Street.

The streets are not being entirely pedestrianised and will all still be accessible for cars, but motorists will have to use different junctions. The Newcastle Cycling Campaign called the scheme “transformative for people living in and walking and cycling through this neighbourhood”.

Newcastle City Council announced that the project would be introduced as an experimental trial lasting up to 18 months, with a public consultation due to run between October and April. Double yellow lines will also be painted on the north side of Stannington Avenue to prevent “inconsiderate parking”, while there will also be a change in priority for vehicles at the Stratford Road-Mowbray Street junction.
