Our chair Katja will give a presentation at the Cycle City / Active City conference in Newcastle. She will speak in her capacity of PhD researcher at Northumbria University. Newcastle City Council is kindly sponsoring the attendance of three campaigners, and we will report back from the event, including Katja’s presentation, at a later date.

chairKatja’s abstract – Lessons about cycle commuting from the 2011 UK Census

Dipl-Ing Katja Leyendecker CEng EurIng, katja.leyendecker@northumbria.ac.uk and Dr Seraphim Alvanides, S.Alvanides@northumbria.ac.uk

Both Northumbria University at Newcastle, Architecture & Built Environment

The 2011 UK Census contains valuable information for researchers, practitioners and decision makers. In this presentation we will be presenting evidence of gender imbalance in cycle commuting patterns for a range of local authorities in England. In addition, we will be exploring distances travelled by mode for Tyne and Wear. This analysis will consider different transport transitions and futures for Newcastle. The discussion will include mode share options, target demographics (particularly gender) and their spatial design preferences.
