Montreal : North America’s best bicycling
This story is part of our youReport series.
Do you remember Bruce McVean from Liveable London? He spoke – and most excellently at that – at our members meeting last year: If not now then when?. Well, he was off to North America recently and visited Montreal which the Copenhagenize Index ranks Montreal 11th. It says “Once again, Montreal maintains its position as North America’s premiere bicycle city” with a little word of warning that ” a number of North American cities are hovering just outside the Top 20 and they’re not going to wait for your lead”.
In any case, these pictures really speak for themselves.
Photo 1 – One of many quality protected bike lanes in Montreal, not yet blanket coverage but they add up to a decent network
Photo 2 – Indicator species alert – children using bike lanes, a sure sign that Montreal is doing something right
Photo 3 – Parking converted to much needed outdoor restaurant seating, street will hopefully soon be pedestrianised too
Photo 4 – Couple of parking spaces outside restaurant or a dozen chairs? No prizes for guessing which is better for business
Photo 5 – DIY Streets folks wld like these corner treatments that are all over Montreal’s Plateau Mont-Royal
