Metro’s press release following the conference now reveals they weren’t considering the matter of bicycles on the metro after all. They’d already ruled it out! Why, Metro, why? Left hand, right hand… or is it something altogether more sinister? We’ll have to keep wondering… We are in the process of drafting an open letter and will be seeking your support soon. Wheels in Motion

We’ve launched ‘Wheels in Motion – Seven Cycle Routes for Newcastle’. We’ve written to councillors to bring them up to speed on this crucial campaign initiative and asked for their support. As part of the annual ‘councillor survey’, the campaign also lobbied councillors to ‘make a little pledge for cycling’… here’s their big chance to bring the recently adopted ‘Cycling Manifesto’ to life. Naturally we’ve submitted our proposal to council officers and included some strategic thoughts too: our ‘Wheels in Motion’ proposal should form part of the ‘Local Sustainable Transport Fund’ bid. Road Safety

Road safety ain’t tricky. We all know that motorised road users can cause more damage than the vulnerable ones, i.e. pedestrians and cyclists. Road safety campaigns should therefore mainly be targeted at the cause of danger. And everybody should be involved. What about bringing together cyclists and bus drivers, giving motorised drivers a chance to see the world from the view of the saddle rather than from behind the steering wheel? Make a Little Pledge for Cycling

We continue sussing out councillors in Newcastle. How cycle-friendly are they? What do they know about cycling? Where are the gaps and problems? Knowledge, experience, policy? And how can we help? The aim is to find the individuals we can work with, the ones who are willing to lend an open ears.
