City Centre 20mph expansion TRO

We would firstly like to express our thanks and support to the the council for extending the city centre 20mph. This is something we have been asking for over the past few years and we are glad to see that this is happening. We would also like to take this as opportunity to raise a few questions and points that we have about the 20mph zone. Firstly, we feel that a number of streets should also be included in the 20mph zone: Barras Bridge, between Claremont Road and Haymarket The Quayside – in particular the section East of the swing[…]

Benwell Lane TRO

In general we support the council with the proposed changes as they will create an improvement for cycling along this section of road. We do have some cycle safety concerns from the design which have previously been discussed with the council, these are: The stretches where cycle lanes are provided on the right hand side (with traffic flow) of parked cars instead of being protected on the left hand side. Where the bus stop/cycle infrastructure is not as good as it could be (e.g. by Prince Philip Road, a shared space bus stop has been provided, but space would allow[…]

John Dobson Street TRO

To John Dobson Street design team Following the comments we made during the recent public engagement phase, we are happy to see the scheme still in tact at the traffic order stage. When we last commented on the scheme we made a specific point about the cycle roundabout at the junction with Northumberland Road being of an unnecessarily complex layout for cycling – we are glad to see that this junction has been simplified. We do however have questions we would like to ask at this stage. 1) On the junction with Northumberland Road, on the West side the movements[…]

Acorn Road – traffic order response

NewCycling (Newcastle Cycling Campaign) generally support the changes though we do have a few concerns that we would like to raise: We feel that the possibility of creating a vibrant street scape that increases walking and cycling in the area has been watered down significantly since the plans were first drawn up, and this has been done to provide a small number of extra car parking spaces. We are very disappointed that this has happened. It is not clear how cyclists will exit Acorn Road on to Osborne Road, and likewise it is not clear how cyclists will enter Acorn[…]

John Dobson Street

This week the council have made plans for John Dobson Street public. You can view the plans here, and you can share your views on the scheme here. Alternatively, the council are holding sessions at the City Library over the following week (details available through the previous links). With this plan, we are very optimistic about the future of John Dobson Street to be one for people – as a destination as well as connecting more fairly and smartly by enabling active and healthy travel choices. The conceptual plan that we have seen appears to achieve that shift away from[…]

We will not be able to make the appointment. As a group of volunteers, most of us are in full-time employment so that 13:00 is not a feasible time for us to attend meetings.
