Space for Cycling ride 2015

After the very successful Big Toon Ride last May and the Civic Cycle Ride in September, we are calling on all bike users, young and old, to show support for Space for Cycling by riding with us, once again on Saturday 25 April 2015. The aim of the ride is to show solidarity and unity for a smarter healthier city, and strength of voice for change and action to create high quality cycling infrastructure, and win the continued support of local politicians.

We will be cycling across our iconic bridges, from Newcastle to Gateshead and back.

A bit of background info about Space for Cycling:

The national Space for Cycling campaign aims to create the conditions where anyone can cycle, anywhere, safely – coordinated by CTC in conjunction with local cycle campaign groups, building on a London-focussed initiative run by the London Cycling Campaign. It is supported by cycle industry funding from the Bicycle Association’s ‘Bike Hub’ levy and by private donations.

People-friendly streets are the life-blood of safe, pleasant and healthy communities. Enabling walking and cycling is vital. Back in May and September, at each ride, two hundred of us took to the city streets to ask our Councillors for safe space for cycling and to seek the funding that’s needed to civilise and diversify our transport system. Since then Newcastle City Council has taken the lead amongst the English core cities: by October 2014 67% of the City Councillors had pledged their support.
