Northumbria Police and the law

After a useful and hopeful meeting with Police and Crime Commissioner’s deputy, we reported here, our hopes were quickly squashed for Northumbria Police to adopt a real, honest and fair attitude towards city cycling any time soon. It appears that their officers do not even know the basics of the Highway Code and their boss, Vera Baird, thinks she’s done enough.

As chair of Newcycling and a city centre bike commuter, I will certainly add my voice to the chorus: I have seen, too many times, a police officer waiting in the bike box with no reason to do so… and the bike box I am talking about – ironically – is the one right outside the Police Station on Pilgrim Street. I admit, I had an inkling of doubting her sincerity when Vera Baird sent her deputy to the meeting we had arranged together with RoadPeace and Sustrans to talk about wider impact of policing practices relating to road death investigations, and in particular the use and adoption of RDIM. I still hope we can meet Vera and talk to her directly. The offer still stands.
