A cycle plan for Jesmond – our local group reports

This offshoot of the Newcastle Cycling Campaign was set up because of several members’ comments on a) lots of students cycling in Jesmond b) no child or elderly people cycling c) lovely flat terrain and proximity to shops d) lamentable cycling infrastructure In 2012 we cycled round with councillors and then with officers and pointed out such as • the lack of safe road crossings • crazy signing: route lands you on a busy road with no cycle lanes • the very busy nature of Osborne Road • the rat runs on cycle routes and the impossible right turnings eg[…]

Council forum review

The council’s financial year is coming to an end. This prompted us to review progress by checking forum’s minutes and actions and thereby assessing the sincerity of the promise to develop Strategic Cycle Routes (SCR). Here’s what’s outstanding: • (closing) budget plan 12/13 • new budget plan 13/14 to discuss priorities • SCR programme • Walker programme (for lessons learnt exercise) As basic info is missing, our verdict can only be of a luke-warm persuasion. We have to learn quickly and move on to a brighter and more enlightened future. It is a big shame that these Councillors failed to understand the concept of the Strategic Cycle Routes and what is proposed for Welbeck Road.
