In August 2017, we responded to the online Highways England A1 (between Scotswood and North Brunton) consultation and expressed our strong disagreement with the proposal and its complete lack of consideration for cycling and walking.
About the scheme
To what extent do you agree, or disagree, with the need for improvements on the A1 between Scotswood and North Brunton?
I support the proposed improvement option for the A1 between Scotswood and North Brunton.
Please provide more details on why you are in support, or not in support, of this option.:
The widening of A1 will in the long term most likely provide no improvement in congestion, as shown with many other other simialr works. The works will most likely only encourage and induce more trips to be taken on the road that could have been made using other transport methods.
If the works do go ahead, then the opportunity must be taken to address the issue that the A1 acts as barrier for cycling and walking within Newcastle. Any works carried out must be be done in line with IAN 195 16 – Cycle Traffic and the Strategic Road Network (http://www.standardsforhighways.co.uk/ha/standards/ians/pdfs/ian195.pdf). All existing crossing over the A1 within the area the works are planned must be brought up to the level of provision specified within the document.
In addition to this, Highways England should work with the council and other local interest groups to identify where further links are needed across the A1 for walking and cycling, to help redress the severence issues the road presents.
From the material provided so far, the impression is that Highways England have not considered the impact this road has on walking and cycling.

About the public exhibitions
Did you attend a public exhibition?
How did you hear about the public exhibitions?
Other (please state): We were not made aware of this scheme until after the public exhibitions.
Do you have any further comments about the project or the engagement process?
Q9: Highways England should have worked with the Newcastle Council to identify key groups that would have had an interest in this scheme.
The engagment has focussed on traffic travelling along the A1 with no consideration given to how people cross the A1 and the problems the A1 presents especially for active travel.
